Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

From www.networkworld.com:

Apple CEO and e-mail pen pal Steve Jobs will be the opening speaker at this year’s D: All Things Digital conference, conference producer and host Kara Swisher announced on Tuesday. The conference runs from June 1-3 in the Los Angeles area.

It won’t be Jobs’s first appearance on the conference stage: he’s appeared there several times in the past, perhaps most memorably in a 2007 joint session with former Microsoft CEO and legendary frenemy Bill Gates (pictured). The two titans dished with hosts Swisher and Wall Street Journal columnist Walt Mossberg on the Mac vs. PC ads, the future of computing, and even took a rare introspective look back at their shared history.

Yahoo’s Bartz exports personal style to Europe

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

From news.cnet.com:

While federal and state laws do limit newsroom searches, they’re unlikely to help Gizmodo’s editors if they’re the target of a criminal probe into Apple’s iPhone prototype.

First, it was all about details of a purported “iPhone 4G.” Then the saga of how Gizmodo got that device exploded into a criminal investigation and questioning of the role of journalists.

With 16 months at the helm, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz defends her company, touts the advertising business, and takes potshots at Facebook.

Officials have dispatched robotic submarines to try to stop oil leaking from a sunken rig on the Gulf of Mexico 130 miles southeast of New Orleans.

Steve Jobs to be interviewed at D Conference

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

From news.cnet.com:

Steve Jobs' last appearance at the D: All Things Digital Conference, in 2007.

Jobs last appeared at the D Conference in 2007, in a joint interview with Microsoft founder Bill Gates, in which the two reflected on each other’s legacies in technology.

While Gates is not on the D8 schedule, there’s plenty for Mossberg and Swisher to discuss with Jobs. Swisher specifically mentions that she’ll be asking about the iPad and about Apple’s contentious relationship with Google. There’s also that “4G” iPhone-Gizmodo situation, which we can’t imagine wouldn’t be addressed in some way.

Floppy disk production ends, Steve Jobs says “I told you so”

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

From www.beatweek.com:

Twelve years after Apple began ringing the death knell for the floppy drive by declining to include one on its iMac computer, the floppy disk era officially comes to an end today as Sony ceases manufacturing the disks. The news comes as a surprise, as most people either didn’t know the disks were still being manufactured or had forgotten that they ever existed in the first place. The public’s mood toward the floppy (or total lack thereof) here in 2010 stands in stark contrast to the tenor back in 1998, …

Does Steve Jobs Hate Blogs?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

From www.deathandtaxesmagazine.com:

iPhonegate got more interesting on Monday, as Gizmodo editor John Chen’s computers were seized by police under warrant from a Superior Court Judge in San Mateo County. But more interesting is the philosophical question this raises about Apple’s relationship to technology: does Steve Jobs hate blogs?

Jobs clearly believes in limiting controls as a means to optimizing excellence: hence the approval process of the App Store and the intense inter-company secrecy surrounding all its R&D. Apple’s approach to technological progress is, to some extent, at odds with the trend of the ever more open, more shareable communication of the blog world and the open-source cheerleaders.
